Wix review: broad business tools with significant platform lock-in

Wix is a hosted website platform that combines visual editing, AI-assisted creation, templates, domains, hosting, forms, marketing, ecommerce, bookings, events, memberships, restaurants, analytics, and an app marketplace.

It is one of the broadest all-in-one builders for small businesses. That breadth makes Wix convenient, but it can also create a complex subscription stack and a site that is difficult to move elsewhere.

Wix pricing in 2026

Official US guidance checked in September 2026 lists a Free plan and four main paid tiers. Annual subscriptions are paid upfront and prices vary by location, tax, promotion, and currency:

  • Free: $0. Build and publish on a Wix-branded address with Wix branding. It is useful for evaluation but not a professional custom-domain launch.
  • Light: about $17 per month billed annually. It connects a custom domain, removes Wix branding, includes 2 GB storage, a light marketing suite, and two collaborators. It does not provide the full payment and ecommerce capabilities of Core.
  • Core: about $29 per month billed annually. It adds 50 GB storage, five collaborators, the basic marketing suite, payment acceptance, basic ecommerce, and scheduling and service tools.
  • Business: about $39 per month billed annually. It includes 100 GB storage, ten collaborators, standard marketing and ecommerce capabilities, and stronger business operations.
  • Business Elite: about $159 per month billed annually. It adds unlimited storage, 100 collaborators, advanced marketing and ecommerce, multi-cloud hosting, and the advanced developer platform.
  • Enterprise: negotiated pricing and services for larger organizations.

Monthly billing costs more; Wix’s official 2026 guidance lists approximately $24, $36, $46, and $172 per month for Light through Business Elite. Most eligible annual plans include a new-domain voucher for the first year, not later renewals.

The plan decision in plain language

Choose Light for a brochure, portfolio, or simple lead-generation site that does not need online payments. Core is the practical entry point for a store, bookings, or paid services. Business suits a growing operation that needs more storage, marketing, ecommerce, and collaborators. Business Elite needs a clear high-traffic, development, or multi-team justification.

Do not choose only by storage. Compare product and transaction capabilities, automation, forms, analytics, collaborators, developer features, support, and every app needed for the actual workflow.

The plan price is only part of the total. Add domain renewal, email, payment processing, paid apps, campaigns, phone or messaging services, professional services, and migration costs.

Wix Harmony, templates, and AI creation

Wix Harmony is the newer standard editing experience and is included within Wix’s platform rather than sold as a separate plan. Users can start from AI prompts or templates, then modify layouts, sections, text, images, and business features.

AI can accelerate the first draft of a site, copy, images, sections, and business setup. Review every generated claim, price, statistic, testimonial, image right, policy, and accessibility label. Generic AI output can make a business site look complete while saying very little.

Do not submit credentials, customer records, confidential plans, or sensitive content to AI features without an approved policy.

Design freedom and responsive behavior

Wix provides substantial visual freedom, templates, reusable sections, responsive tools, animations, and media. Wix Studio offers more advanced agency and responsive-design workflows than the standard editor.

Freedom can create inconsistent pages. Define global fonts, colors, buttons, spacing, image ratios, form styles, and approved sections before production. Avoid placing every element independently when a reusable structure is available.

Test mobile layouts, zoom, keyboard navigation, headings, contrast, focus, tap targets, long content, translations, and reduced motion. A desktop-perfect design can fail badly on a small screen.

Wix Studio for agencies and professionals

Wix Studio targets agencies and professional teams with responsive design controls, reusable assets, client management, collaboration, code capabilities, and multi-site workflows.

Agencies should compare its permissions, billing, client handoff, white-label expectations, reusable systems, and per-site costs with Duda, Webflow, WordPress, and Framer.

The client should control the domain, business plan, payment account, analytics, recovery details, and customer data. Use named collaborators instead of shared credentials.

Ecommerce capabilities

Core and higher plans can accept payments and run ecommerce. Wix supports products, inventory, variants, discounts, abandoned-cart tools, shipping, tax connections, customer accounts, marketplaces, and other selling capabilities depending on plan and region.

Payment processors charge their own rates. Confirm Wix Payments availability, supported methods, payouts, reserves, disputes, refunds, international fees, currency conversion, and processor alternatives for the operating country.

Test product data, out-of-stock behavior, coupons, taxes, shipping, checkout, failed payments, refunds, customer emails, fulfillment, and analytics. For complex catalogs, B2B pricing, global storefronts, or a very large app ecosystem, compare Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce.

Bookings and service businesses

Wix can manage services, staff, availability, calendars, appointments, classes, payments, reminders, and client workflows. Core is the first current tier positioned for payments and scheduling.

Test time zones, buffers, capacity, locations, rescheduling, cancellation, deposits, no-shows, reminders, staff permissions, and calendar synchronization. A booking page is only useful when the operating team trusts the schedule.

Compare the plan and regional limits with dedicated tools when booking rules, resources, health data, or multi-location operations are complex.

Forms, CRM, automation, and marketing

Wix combines forms, contacts, basic CRM functions, automations, chat, analytics, email marketing, social tools, and customer communication. This can reduce the number of integrations needed by a small business.

Plan and usage limits matter. Confirm form counts, storage, automation quotas, email sends, contacts, collaborators, and paid add-ons. Test spam protection, notification delivery, CRM assignment, confirmation states, and analytics events.

Document consent, retention, deletion, access, and suppression rules. Do not assume an all-in-one dashboard automatically creates a compliant process.

App marketplace and recurring costs

The Wix App Market extends stores, bookings, reviews, events, search, marketing, analytics, and other functions. Apps are useful but create recurring cost, data sharing, performance, and vendor-dependency risks.

Install only what supports a documented requirement. Record the app owner, price, renewal, permissions, data flow, support contact, and removal process. Test what happens to data and site behavior when an app is disabled.

A stack of small monthly charges can make a low-cost plan more expensive than a stronger platform with the required features built in.

SEO and content publishing

Wix provides editable titles and descriptions, custom URLs, redirects, sitemaps, robots controls, structured-data options, image alt text, social previews, analytics connections, and SEO setup guidance.

Search performance still depends on useful content, internal links, authority, technical health, local signals, and competition. Use logical headings, concise URLs, optimized media, accurate schema, and a clear content architecture.

For a large publication with complex taxonomies, multiple editorial roles, or advanced structured content, compare WordPress, Webflow, or a headless CMS.

Performance and accessibility

Wix manages hosting and infrastructure, but page performance still depends on media, fonts, animations, apps, embeds, tracking, chat, and consent tools.

Compress images, avoid unnecessary video, limit animations and apps, and test representative pages on real mobile connections. Monitor Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and layout shifts.

Wix provides accessibility tools, but the site owner must verify keyboard access, focus, contrast, headings, labels, errors, alt text, captions, zoom, and reduced motion. Automated checks are only a starting point.

Developer tools and custom applications

Higher Wix plans and the advanced developer platform support code, data collections, APIs, integrations, and custom business behavior. These tools can bridge the gap between a basic builder and a bespoke application.

Custom code still needs secure architecture, input validation, access control, testing, logging, monitoring, and maintenance. Do not store secrets in client-side code or treat AI-generated functions as production-ready.

Define what business-critical systems remain outside Wix and how failures are handled.

Domains, email, and account governance

A domain voucher generally applies only to a new eligible domain for the first year. Renewal, privacy, and professional email can be separate charges.

Keep registration, DNS, billing, analytics, payment processing, and recovery under business ownership. Review collaborators regularly and protect the account and recovery inbox with strong authentication.

Document every connected service and keep an independent continuity record.

Migration and portability

Wix is a proprietary hosted platform. Site designs and many apps, stores, bookings, automations, member functions, and business workflows do not export as a fully working project for another host.

Keep independent copies of copy, media, products, orders, contacts, bookings, analytics, redirects, DNS, policies, and configuration. Test available exports before the business depends heavily on the platform.

A move to WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, or another builder will normally require design reconstruction and workflow replacement.

Wix alternatives

  • Squarespace: more restrained design and polished service, portfolio, and creator sites.
  • Webflow: deeper responsive systems, CMS modeling, and professional visual development.
  • Duda: stronger agency permissions, reusable sections, and client operations.
  • WordPress: maximum ecosystem and hosting control with more maintenance.
  • Shopify: stronger commerce operations and app ecosystem for growing stores.
  • Framer: fast design-led marketing sites and collaboration.
  • Hostinger Website Builder: lower introductory cost for simple sites.

Who should choose Wix?

Wix fits entrepreneurs, local businesses, creators, service providers, restaurants, event operators, and smaller stores that want a broad managed platform. Light works for simple presence; Core is the business baseline when payments or bookings matter.

It is less suitable for organizations needing unrestricted infrastructure, highly portable applications, complex content relationships, or advanced global commerce without custom engineering.

Wix verdict

Wix offers one of the most complete small-business website ecosystems. Its visual editors, AI tools, apps, ecommerce, bookings, CRM, and marketing can replace several separate services.

That convenience should be evaluated as a system. Build a representative trial site, calculate every plan and app over three years, test the complete customer journey, audit accessibility and performance, and document how the business would leave Wix later.
