It supports online and in-person payments, subscriptions, invoicing, marketplaces, fraud controls, tax automation, identity verification, issuing, treasury-style products, reporting, and global payouts. Its main strength is not simply card processing; it is the breadth of commerce workflows a company can build on one platform.
That breadth also makes Stripe easy to underestimate. The familiar 2.9% + 30¢ US card rate is only the starting point. International cards, currency conversion, manually entered payments, disputes, billing, tax, fraud tools, Connect, instant payouts, and other products can change the effective cost. Stripe is best for businesses that value integration flexibility and can govern payment operations carefully.

What Stripe includes
Stripe Payments is the foundation for accepting cards, wallets, bank debits, bank transfers, and many local methods. Businesses can choose a hosted Checkout page, no-code Payment Links, embeddable Elements, mobile SDKs, or direct API integrations. Stripe Terminal extends the stack to supported in-person hardware.
Additional products address recurring billing, invoices, sales tax, fraud prevention, revenue recognition, marketplaces, connected accounts, identity checks, card issuing, financial data connections, and analytics. Each solves a different problem and may have separate pricing or eligibility.
A small merchant can launch without writing code through Checkout, Payment Links, or a commerce plug-in. A platform can build much deeper flows through APIs and webhooks. The correct integration depth depends on conversion goals, engineering capacity, compliance scope, and the need for portability.

The add-ons can stack. A foreign-issued card that requires conversion can cost substantially more than the domestic headline rate. Manually entering card details also costs more and can create different fraud and evidence considerations.
Custom flat rates, interchange-plus pricing, subscriptions, and platform buy rates may be available for eligible businesses. Large merchants should compare custom proposals using their actual card mix, average order value, countries, refund rate, and method distribution.
Bank payments and local methods
ACH Direct Debit can be economical for larger US invoices because its 0.8% fee is capped at $5. However, bank debits behave differently from cards: confirmation timing, returns, mandates, customer expectations, and cash availability require different workflows.
Stripe also supports bank transfers and market-specific methods where available. Each method has its own authorization model, refund behavior, dispute rights, settlement timing, and pricing. Adding more icons is not automatically better; enable methods that match customer geography and order economics.
For high-value B2B payments, compare ACH, wire, card, and invoicing routes. A capped ACH fee can save money, but the business must manage delayed failures and verify when funds are safe to use.
International payments and currencies
Stripe can accept customers across many countries and supports numerous presentment currencies and local methods. Availability depends on the merchant’s Stripe country, business type, integration, and the payment method.
The current US price adds 1.5% for international cards and another 1% when currency conversion is required. Merchants selling globally should decide whether to present in the customer’s currency, settle in one or multiple currencies, or use separate local entities. Conversion convenience can improve customer experience while reducing margin.
Model revenue by card origin, presentment currency, settlement currency, refund rate, and payment method. A single blended processing percentage can hide the real profitability of an international market.
Disputes and chargeback economics
Stripe’s current US pricing separates two card-dispute charges. The dispute received fee is $15 for each dispute. A separate $15 dispute countered fee applies when the merchant manually responds. Stripe says the countered fee is returned when the dispute is won, but not when it is lost; the received fee still applies.
Stripe Smart Disputes can prepare evidence using AI. Its listed fee is 30% of the disputed amount for each dispute won, with no Smart Disputes fee on lost cases; the dispute received fee still applies. Businesses should compare that success-based cost with internal handling, order value, evidence quality, and expected win rate.
Useful evidence can include accurate product descriptions, customer communications, delivery confirmation, account or service usage, cancellation terms, device information, and proof that the customer accepted policies. Webhook-driven case alerts and clear ownership prevent missed deadlines.
Fraud prevention and Radar
Stripe Radar evaluates payments using signals across Stripe’s network. Basic machine-learning protection is included with standard Payments pricing, while Radar for Fraud Teams adds customizable rules, review tools, and analytics under separate pricing.
No fraud system is infallible. Aggressive blocking can reject valuable customers, while weak rules can produce losses and card-network monitoring. Track fraud by market, product, acquisition channel, card type, and fulfillment model. Review false positives as carefully as confirmed fraud.
Use strong authentication where appropriate, protect API keys, validate webhook signatures, restrict dashboard roles, require multi-factor authentication, and separate test and live environments. Never expose secret keys in browser code or public repositories.
Payouts, reserves, and cash flow
Stripe supports rolling, weekly, or monthly payout schedules, with timing depending on the merchant country, industry, account history, and risk profile. Keep enough liquidity to fulfill orders without depending on unsettled Stripe balances. Reconcile charges, fees, refunds, disputes, adjustments, and payouts rather than treating each deposit as gross revenue.
Refunds and negative balances
Refunds are created through the dashboard or API and draw from the available Stripe balance. If the balance is insufficient, account-country rules determine how the negative balance is recovered or funded. Refund arrival depends on the customer’s bank and payment method.
Whether original processing fees are returned can depend on the merchant’s pricing agreement and region. US merchants should verify the current refund treatment shown in their Stripe account and contract before building margins. Always include retained fees, customer-service cost, and fraud loss in refund economics.
Billing, invoicing, Tax, and add-on costs
Stripe Billing supports subscriptions, usage-based pricing, trials, coupons, prorations, retries, and customer self-service. Stripe Invoicing supports hosted invoices and payment collection. Stripe Tax can calculate tax across supported jurisdictions. These products can shorten development time but have additional pricing that must be evaluated separately.
Do not compare a Stripe bundle only with a processor’s card rate. Compare the cost of replacing billing logic, tax calculations, fraud review, revenue reporting, retry automation, developer maintenance, and compliance workflows. Paying more for an integrated product can be rational if it removes substantial engineering and operational work.
Stripe Connect for marketplaces
Connect helps platforms onboard sellers or service providers, route funds, collect application fees, manage connected accounts, and support payouts. The platform must choose an account model and decide which party controls pricing, losses, disputes, negative balances, onboarding, and support.
This is an architectural and legal decision, not merely an API choice. Marketplace operators should map fund flows, regulated responsibilities, tax reporting, prohibited businesses, reserves, refunds, and account closure scenarios before implementation. Connect pricing differs by configuration.

A SaaS company, platform, or international ecommerce business may save far more in development and workflow automation than it spends on processing add-ons.
