Full Review
Editorial verdict: BigCommerce is a hosted ecommerce platform for merchants that need a capable catalog, checkout, payments ecosystem, multichannel selling, APIs, and room to grow beyond a small starter store. Its current pricing is tied directly to gross merchandise volume, so the platform decision must model revenue thresholds and provider fees—not just the advertised subscription.
The platform is strongest for teams that value built-in commerce capability and architectural flexibility. It is less attractive when a merchant wants the simplest possible storefront, relies heavily on an app ecosystem that is stronger elsewhere, or expects revenue-based automatic upgrades to create an uncomfortable cost curve.
Best for
- Growing direct-to-consumer and retail businesses with structured catalogs and multiple sales channels
- Merchants that want a hosted platform without maintaining core ecommerce infrastructure
- Brands that need APIs, integrations, custom storefront development, or broader enterprise options
- Teams prepared to manage merchandising, tax, payments, shipping, data, accessibility, and compliance as ongoing operations
What BigCommerce does well
BigCommerce provides the core systems needed to operate an online store: catalog and variant management, content and themes, checkout, payment-provider connections, order processing, promotions, analytics, integrations, sales channels, APIs, and support. Higher-volume merchants can move into more flexible terms, dedicated success support, and enterprise architecture.
The vendor currently distinguishes “Embedded Payment Providers,” which have zero BigCommerce provider fees, from “Open Payment Providers,” which may incur plan-dependent BigCommerce fees calculated on GMV processed through those providers. This offers payment flexibility, but merchants must compare the full provider and platform fee stack.
Current pricing and automatic upgrades
BigCommerce introduced new plan names and revenue mechanics in 2026. Its official US pricing page showed these annual-billing rates on September 1, 2026:
- Core — $29 per month billed annually; $39 month-to-month: for up to $30,000 in trailing-12-month GMV, then automatically upgrades to Growth. Includes chat and email support; phone support is described as a forthcoming add-on.
- Growth — $79 per month billed annually; $105 month-to-month: for up to $100,000 in trailing-12-month GMV, then automatically upgrades to Scale. Includes live phone and chat support.
- Scale — $299 per month billed annually; $399 month-to-month: starts with a $33,333 monthly GMV cap and charges 0.9% on GMV above that cap. BigCommerce says the account automatically upgrades to Performance when trailing-12-month GMV reaches $2 million.
- Performance — starting at $1,499 per month billed annually: custom pricing and payment terms for high-volume businesses, plus a dedicated customer-success manager and live phone/chat support.
BigCommerce states that its GMV calculation uses gross order value minus 10% on a trailing-12-month basis. That figure can differ from internal accounting. Finance and ecommerce owners should reconcile the platform calculation before forecasting thresholds, overages, or automatic upgrades.
Payments and total cost
Embedded Payment Providers are advertised with zero BigCommerce provider fees, but the payment processor still charges its own processing fees. Open-provider fees vary by plan and are separate platform charges on attributed GMV. The page says debit and credit processing begins at 2.89% plus $0.29 per transaction, with eligibility conditions for published PayPal Braintree rates and no guarantee of approval.
Total cost should include subscription, overages, processing, provider fees, premium themes, apps, development, integrations, tax services, fraud tools, search, email, support, content, migration, maintenance, and internal labor. A platform can have no traditional transaction fee while still producing substantial payment and ecosystem costs.
Where it falls short
- Revenue-based upgrades reduce price predictability. Growth can trigger a new tier even if order complexity and support needs stay unchanged.
- Scale introduces GMV overages. The 0.9% rate above the monthly cap can materially change effective cost.
- Payment language requires careful reading. Embedded, open-provider, and processor fees are different charges.
- Replatforming is operationally demanding. Catalog, redirects, customers, orders, tax, apps, tracking, and integrations all need validation.
- Some businesses may prefer a larger theme/app ecosystem or simpler administration. Fit depends on the merchant’s workflow and technical resources.
A practical evaluation test
Build a representative store, not a polished homepage. Import difficult products and variants, configure tax and shipping, connect the intended payment provider, run discounts, create customer groups, test refunds and partial fulfillment, and process orders across desktop and mobile. Include an out-of-stock item, address error, failed payment, cancellation, return, discount conflict, and international order.
Test integrations for ERP, accounting, inventory, fulfillment, CRM, email, analytics, consent, search, reviews, feeds, and support. Measure page speed, checkout completion, administrative time, sync errors, order accuracy, payment cost, app spend, support response, and accessibility. Run a redirect and structured-data crawl before and after migration in a staging environment.
Security, compliance, and governance
Define administrator roles, least privilege, MFA, app approval, API credentials, theme deployment, catalog ownership, discount authorization, refund controls, incident response, backups or exports, and vendor offboarding. Verify PCI responsibilities, privacy and cookie requirements, tax obligations, accessibility, consumer protection, retention, and regional rules with qualified specialists.
Do not assume a hosted platform makes the entire store compliant. Themes, scripts, apps, analytics, product claims, integrations, and staff processes remain merchant responsibilities. Review current security, privacy, subprocessors, data-residency, SLA, support, and contractual terms for the chosen tier.
Alternatives to consider
- Shopify: compare for ease of use, theme and app depth, point of sale, and a large partner ecosystem.
- WooCommerce: compare for WordPress control and open-source flexibility with greater maintenance responsibility.
- Adobe Commerce: compare for complex enterprise catalogs and customized commerce architecture.
- CommerceTools: compare for composable, API-first enterprise commerce.
- Wix or Squarespace Commerce: compare for smaller catalogs and simpler site-building needs.
Final recommendation
Shortlist BigCommerce when hosted reliability, catalog depth, APIs, multichannel commerce, and payment choice align with the merchant’s operating model. Core and Growth are straightforward until revenue thresholds force an upgrade. Scale buyers should calculate the GMV overage curve carefully, while Performance buyers need a negotiated total-cost and service model.
Run the platform decision against three revenue scenarios and a complete integration inventory. The right ecommerce platform is the one that processes edge cases reliably, preserves search and data continuity, supports profitable growth, and remains operable by the team—not the one with the most attractive demo storefront.
Research note: 2026 plan names, annual and monthly rates, GMV thresholds, automatic upgrades, Scale overages, support, and payment-fee language were checked on BigCommerce’s official pricing page on September 1, 2026. Prices and rules can change; verify checkout, provider terms, and the merchant agreement before purchase.
