Midjourney is one of the strongest generative visual tools for concept art, campaign exploration, illustration and stylized image production. Its web interface now reduces the old dependence on Discord, and its Editor and video tools broaden the workflow. The main buying risks are public-by-default creation, GPU-time economics, moderation friction and unresolved legal questions around generated assets.

Best for

Midjourney fits designers, marketers, publishers, filmmakers and creative teams that need rapid visual directions, mood boards, story frames, social concepts and source material for human refinement. It is less appropriate when pixel-perfect typography, deterministic layouts, legally cleared brand assets or confidential unreleased concepts are required without additional review.

Current plans and pricing

Official pricing reviewed in September 2026 listed Basic at $10 monthly, Standard at $30, Pro at $60 and Mega at $120. Annual billing is paid upfront with a 20% discount, producing effective monthly prices of $8, $24, $48 and $96. Extra Fast GPU time costs $4 per hour.

Basic includes 3.3 Fast GPU hours per month, Standard 15, Pro 30 and Mega 60. Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited Relax image generations. Pro and Mega also include unlimited standard-definition Relax video generation and Stealth Mode. Unused Fast time resets at renewal rather than rolling over.

Fast, Relax and Turbo explained

Fast Mode consumes the monthly GPU allocation. Relax waits in a variable queue but does not consume Fast time on eligible plans. Turbo can create images substantially faster but uses roughly double Fast time and is not available with every model version. Video is much more compute-intensive than a typical still-image prompt, so production teams should track actual GPU consumption rather than estimating only from prompt counts.

Creation and editing features

Midjourney supports text and image prompts, style references, Omni Reference for visual consistency, variations, upscaling and a web creation feed. The Editor combines remixing, inpainting, outpainting, pan and zoom and can work with externally uploaded images when the user has the necessary rights. Image-to-video workflows can use a starting frame, with SD and HD availability depending on plan and mode.

Privacy is not the default

Midjourney describes itself as an open community. Creations may appear on its Explore site even when generated through direct messages or a private Discord server. Stealth Mode is available only on Pro and Mega and must be active; it does not hide work posted in public Discord channels. For confidential projects, use Stealth with the web Create page, direct messages or a private server and verify the visibility of existing assets.

Commercial use and ownership

Midjourney’s terms say subscribers own assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law, subject to third-party rights and contractual exceptions. A company with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must use Pro or Mega for company ownership. Upscaled images created by another user remain that creator’s. Users grant Midjourney a broad, perpetual license to submitted content and generated assets.

Contract language does not settle whether an output is copyrightable in every jurisdiction or whether it infringes third-party rights. High-value commercial work needs provenance records, trademark and likeness checks, human authorship and legal review.

Where it falls short

Precise text, repeatable layouts and art direction can require multiple iterations and downstream editing. Public defaults are unsuitable for many client projects. GPU costs are less intuitive than image credits, particularly for video and advanced edits. Moderation can block benign prompts, while stylistic similarity or accidental resemblance creates brand and legal risk. There is no free ongoing plan in the published tier table.

A practical evaluation test

1. Create a representative brief with required aspect ratios, subjects, brand constraints and exclusions.
2. Generate at least three directions, then test variation, reference consistency and Editor changes.
3. Measure usable outputs per Fast GPU hour, including rejected iterations and video.
4. Check text, anatomy, product details, cultural accuracy and accessibility with human reviewers.
5. Run reverse-image, trademark, likeness and rights checks on shortlisted commercial assets.
6. Verify Stealth behavior and archive prompts, source images, model versions and approvals.

Safety, privacy and governance

Upload only content the organization has permission to process. Prohibit impersonation, abusive edits, sexualized deepfakes, deceptive uses and other violations of Midjourney’s guidelines. Treat public prompts and galleries as disclosure risks. Establish human approval for customer-facing assets, label synthetic media where required and preserve records of substantial human edits.

Teams should review account sharing restrictions, procurement terms, retention, deletion, incident response and the broad content license. Each user needs an appropriate account, and automated access or reverse engineering is restricted by the terms.
